Moissanite is silicon carbide — a crystalline gemstone in its own right, with its own chemistry, its own optical signature and its own place in the mineral world. It is not a diamond, and it is not pretending to be one.

It was first identified in 1893 by the French chemist Henri Moissan, who found microscopic crystals in a meteorite crater in Arizona and initially mistook them for diamonds. He later won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Natural moissanite is so vanishingly rare that no jewellery could ever be made from it, so every stone you will encounter today is grown in a laboratory — the same material, formed under controlled conditions instead of inside a falling star.

It is a real gemstone. The distinction matters: a simulant such as cubic zirconia exists only to imitate diamond and has no independent identity. Moissanite is a distinct mineral species that a gemmologist can identify on sight — and one that happens to outperform diamond on two of the three qualities that make a stone sparkle.

We describe our stones as moissanite because that is what they are. They are chosen for how they behave in light, not for what they resemble.

Diamond remains the harder stone. But moissanite bends light more sharply and splits it into spectral colour more than twice as strongly — which is why a moissanite throws noticeably more rainbow flashes, particularly in moving or directional light.

Sparkle is really three separate things. Brilliance is white light returned to the eye. Fire is white light split into spectral colour. Scintillation is the flashing that happens as the stone moves.

Moissanite's higher refractive index means more light is turned back out of the stone rather than leaking through the pavilion, and its dispersion — the measure of how widely it fans white light into colour — is roughly two and a half times that of diamond. The practical result is a livelier, more colourful sparkle. Some people prefer exactly this. Others prefer the cooler, whiter return of a diamond. Neither is a flaw; they are different optical characters.

At 9.25 on the Mohs scale, moissanite is the second-hardest material used in fine jewellery, sitting above sapphire and ruby and below only diamond. It is genuinely suited to everyday wear — an engagement ring, a piece worn without ceremony.

It does not cloud, dull or yellow with age. Its colour and clarity are structural properties of the crystal, not a coating or treatment that can wear away. A moissanite bought today will look the same in twenty years, assuming ordinary care.

These are often mentioned in the same breath, and they should not be. Cubic zirconia sits around 8 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale — soft enough that the facet edges abrade with ordinary wear, which is why CZ pieces develop a milky, tired look after a year or two of use.

Moissanite is substantially harder, considerably more brilliant, and holds its finish indefinitely. It also sits in a different price and quality tier altogether. If you have owned CZ and been disappointed by how it aged, that experience does not transfer.

Carat is a unit of weight, not size. Because moissanite is about ten percent less dense than diamond, a moissanite and a diamond cut to identical millimetre dimensions will not weigh the same — the moissanite will weigh less, despite looking exactly the same size on the hand.

For that reason the trade specifies moissanite by millimetre measurement, or quotes a diamond equivalent weight — the carat weight a diamond of that same physical size would carry. It is the honest way to describe the stone, and the only one that tells you what you will actually see.

Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush will restore a stone that has gone flat — most dullness is skin oil and hand cream sitting on the pavilion, not anything wrong with the gem. Rinse and pat dry.

Moissanite itself is safe in an ultrasonic cleaner, though the setting may not be, so check the metal and any accent stones first. Remove your jewellery for swimming, cleaning and the gym, and store pieces separately so harder stones cannot knock against softer settings.
